Hopewell Supports World Diabetes Day

Hopewell Holdings Limited (“Hopewell”) supports World Diabetes Day again, raising global awareness of the diabetes. Hopewell has sponsored the venue of World Diabetes Day press conference for five consecutive years.

This year, World Diabetes Day press conference was held at Hopewell Centre on 9 November 2012, inviting Ms Joanna Hotung, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Juvenile Diabetes Association and Dr. Pik-to Cheung, Associate Professor, Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, University of Hong Kong jointly presented the ceremony for Hong Kong Diabetes Awareness Week. Dr. Pik-to Cheung reported on children's diabetes development trends and the latest medical advances to increase public awareness on diabetes, especially diabetic children and teenagers, encouraging people to support World Diabetes Day.

To raise public awareness on diabetic children, Hong Kong Juvenile Diabetes Association launched the Diabetes Awareness Week during 9-15 November. Hopewell encouraged staff to dress in blue on 14 November 2012 showing their support for the event and their care for diabetic children.

The 2012 Hopewell Bowling Charity League, co-organised by the Hopewell Holdings Limited (“Hopewell”), Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Centre (“KITEC”) and Hong Kong Bowling City, was held earlier at the Hong Kong Bowling City in KITEC. A total of HKD142,000 has been contributed to the “Strike” Bowling Programme (“Strike”) of St. James’ Settlement to nurture the sports potential of intellectual disabled youths.

The annual Hopewell bowling competition aims to encourage staff members of local companies and organisations to actively participate in the bowling sports and to promote work-life balance. It also aims at seeking support from the business community for a charitable cause and allows the sustainable development of “Strike”.

A total of 32 teams from renowned companies and organisations joined the League to compete for the Team and Singles Events awards. A celebrity team formed by artists Steven @ Boyz, Rannes, YT and Benedict, as well as two “Strike” Bowling Teams were on the alleys together during the competition. This truly reflects the integration of the disabled persons and the able-bodied. Artist Hanjin Tan and representatives from Hong Kong Bowling Team namely Michael Mak, Leo Tse and Achilles Hung also demonstrated at the League.

Hopewell in collaboration with its community partner St. James’ Settlement, kicked off the “Strike”, the Hong Kong-First Bowling Training Program for intellectually disabled youths last summer, with the ultimate goal of training athletes to participate in the 37th Hong Kong Special Olympics in 2013.

Hopewell Holdings Limited (“Hopewell”) participated in “Dress Casual Day” organised by The Community Chest of Hong Kong. 195 staff members joint the event and dress casual with the “Dress Casual Day” sticker.

Hopewell is committed to contributing to society, participates in and sponsoring fund-raising programmes organised by The Community Chest to help people in need.

Hopewell Partners with Newsweek to Support Youth Development and Education

Supporting youth development is a core part of Hopewell Holdings Limited’s corporate sustainability involvement. To help local university students view international issues from a global perspective and enhance their analytical abilities and English writing skills, Hopewell Holdings Limited (“Hopewell”) has sponsored an innovative education program in Hong Kong with Newsweek magazine. The first year of this Hopewell-Newsweek Education Program (“the Program”) was concluded in June 2012 when 15 university students were selected as winners of the Program’s Essay Contest.

Enhancing analytical and language skills

The Hopewell-Newsweek Education Program is the first of its kind in Hong Kong targeting English and Business faculty students at seven Hong Kong universities, aiming to enhance their awareness of global events by keeping them informed with in-depth analysis and insight from a truly international perspective.

Running for 13 consecutive weeks, the Program has provided sponsored education program packs including the latest issue of Newsweek, worksheets and model answer sheets drafted by expert teaching professionals to the students each week, facilitating their self-learning and self-assessment.

Essay Contest

Participating students in the Program were invited to join the contest through submission of an essay in response to one of four thought-provoking questions based on current political and social issues. Among the many essay submissions, 15 winners were chosen by a panel of education experts, judging according to clarity of argument, understanding of subject, and creative and technical writing skills.

The winners were presented certificates and book vouchers at the Essay Contest Award Presentation Ceremony held at Hopewell Centre in June 2012 in acknowledgement of their efforts in cultural and linguistic spectrums.

Participating universities included: The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University and Lingnan University.

Hopewell Supports “Red Décor Day”

Hopewell Holdings Limited (“Hopewell”) supported and sponsored Red Décor Day organised by Hong Kong Red Cross. This event commemorates the Four Geneva Conventions, drawn up on the same date 60 years ago, which grant the Red Cross neutrality in delivering humanitarian services around the world.

318 staff members took part in Red Décor Day by donating generously, dressing or wearing accessories, in red in order to commemorate this occasion and bring the “FUN and RED” atmosphere to offices. To capture the memorable red moments, participants take photos and participate the Humanitarian x Red Photo Competition with the theme of “Fix your Red IncREDible Day”.
